Hash Links in Coggle

We have lots of great ways to share Coggles, you can invite people to work with you, control access for groups using Organisations, or use private links to share with people who don’t use Coggle – or with the whole world.

All of these work really well to share a whole Coggle, but what if you want to focus attention on just one part, or have different links that link to different areas? That’s where hash links (also known as link fragments) come in!

#links

To use a hash link just put #, followed by the first words of the branch that you want to focus on, but replace any spaces with hyphens (-), and ignore any characters that aren’t letters[1]. For example, to link to a branch with the text:

My awesome branch

You should put this on the end of the link to your Coggle (try it here):

#my-awesome-branch

And to link to a branch with the text:

Andy's awesome branch!

You can use the hash:

#andys-awesome-branch

You can even use links like this within a Coggle (using the Markdown syntax for links), and when you do this you can omit the full url, and just use the link hash, for example:

This [link here](#the-green-branch) will focus on the green branch.

Finally, remember that you don’t have to include all of the text, just enough of it to uniquely identify a branch. If more than one branch matches the hash, the behaviour will be unpredictable – and of course if you change the text the link will break.

That’s all for now!

[1] At the moment hash-links are limited to ascii characters – we’re looking into ways to extend them to unicode text, so stay tuned for that!
